Providing Crisis Care in a Pandemic: Virtual Based Wards and Crisis Units in Winnipeg, Manitoba

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Virtual Mental Health Wards (Virtual Reassessment and Observation Unit-vROU was created in Manitoba as a virtual psychiatric ward with community patients having access to daily psychiatric assessments and 24/7 crisis services. A Virtual Crisis Stabilization Unit-vCSU) was also created to explore patient demographics, outcomes, comment on effectiveness, and explore physician assistant (PA) roles in Psychiatry and views on virtual care.
This session will illustrate how virtual mental health wards are feasible and effective mechanisms of providing access to care for patients with significant cost savings potential. The session will also PAs play a key role in the provision of crisis care.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:
- Outline the requirements for creating a successful virtual ward.
- Discuss the aspects of patient care that can be redesigned and administered in a virtual setting.
- Discuss the unique role that PAs can play in psychiatry and administering virtual care.
- Disseminate information on improved ways to increase access to crisis services through virtual care
